Why 39mm Still Matters

When Gerald Genta sketched the Royal Oak in 1972, 39mm was considered large for a dress watch. Half a century later, the same diameter reads as restrained. The 16202 preserves these original proportions faithfully, and at 8.1mm thick, it sits closer to the wrist than any other current Royal Oak. The difference between 8.1mm and the 10.6mm of a 15500 is not subtle — it fundamentally changes how the watch disappears under a shirt cuff.

The Petite Tapisserie pattern on the dial distinguishes the Jumbo from its larger siblings, which use the Grande Tapisserie. The Third Generation Jumbo

Each generation of the Jumbo has updated the movement while leaving the case essentially untouched. The 5402 housed the Cal. 2121 (based on the JLC 920). The 15202 continued with the same caliber family. The replica royal oak 16202OR introduces the Cal. 7121, a completely new ultra-thin automatic developed in-house with a 55-hour reserve — a meaningful improvement over the predecessor’s 40 hours.

The movement runs at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), a step up from the 2121’s 19,800 vph, resulting in a smoother seconds hand sweep. For collectors, the 16202 represents the first time the Jumbo has received a genuinely modern movement in its 50-year lineage.
